Why?

It decreases the amount of toxins (such as lead, mercury and cadmium) that enter the environment. It also allows for the recovery of valuable natural resources such as gold, copper and nickel. It requires less energy to recover and recycle natural resources than to mine them from the earth, reducing the use of fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
