Level of Service Changes

Responsibilities

Development Services is under the direction of  Development Services Director, Jhanelle Campbell. The department is responsible for ensuring the orderly growth of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea through the review of development-related projects and amendments to the Town’s Code of Ordinances. The Department provides guidance to applicants and ensures compliance with the Town’s Code of Ordinances.

The Development Services Department is made up of the following divisions:

Planning & Zoning

The Town’s Planning & Zoning Division provides a number of services by conducting zoning research and plan review, reviewing sidewalk café and sign permit applications and issuing Business Tax Receipts (BTR).  Further information on this division can be found here. Planning & Zoning 

The Planning and Zoning Division also provides support to the Planning Board. This Board is composed of 5 regular members and 2 alternates and has the legal authority to make recommendations to the Town Commission on applications for variances and administrative adjustments from the Town’s land development regulations.  They also make recommendations to the Commission regarding the approval of development applications as well as amendments to the Town’s Land Development regulations.  As the Local Planning Agency for the Town, they work to update and enhance the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and guide marketing and outreach strategy concerning the Census.  The board’s decisions are advisory to the Commission.

Building 

The Town’s Building Division services are provided by contract with CAP Government, Inc. (CAP).  CAP employees review building permit applications and conduct permit inspections Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Development Services Department, which is adjacent to Town Hall.  Further information on the Division can be found here Building Department

Code Compliance

The Town’s Code Compliance services are provided by contract with Calvin Giordano & Associates, Inc. (CGA).  Our State-Certified Code Compliance Inspectors investigate potential code violations, work with owners and residents to resolve issues voluntarily wherever possible, and process unresolved violations through the Special Magistrate hearing process as governed by Florida State Statute 162.
