Dealing With Iguanas

In response to the concerns about the growing iguana population in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, the Town Commission has taken three proactive steps to control its growth:

- Amended the Town Code (Sec. 14-14) to permit limited use of an air gun to kill iguanas on a person’s private property.

- Recently hosted a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) community workshop on humane deterrent and removal techniques.

- Awarded a contract to Florida Animal Removal for Iguana and Non-Native Lizard Removal Services.

What can I do as a homeowner?

Green iguanas, spiny-tailed iguanas, monitors, tegus and several other invasive lizard species are non-native to Florida. The population continues to multiply and Floridians have seen the impacts of their presence on infrastructure, landscaping, and buildings. In order to control or deter the critters from the property, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) emphasizes that the animals must be treated humanely when taking steps to protect and eliminate them from your property.

Tips and Prevention

You may learn more facts about iguanas, and tips about prevention, exclusion deterrent techniques by visiting the FWC website. Brochures, useful links and the presentation slides from the technical workshop can be found on the same webpage.

Assistance is available from the FWC South Regional Office in West Palm Beach. Tel: 561-625-5122.
